The Highway Code is for any
person whom uses the road, this includes pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and
motorcyclists.
Parts of the Highway Code are
specific for motorcycle riders.
These parts include, but are
not limited to the following.
The use of protective helmet
Any rider or pillion of a
motorcycle, scooter or moped MUST wear a protective helmet.
This does NOT apply to a
follower of the Sikh religion whilst wearing a turban.
Helmets MUST comply with the
regulations and MUST be fastened.
Before each journey, check that
your helmet visor is clean.
Pillion Passengers
You must not carry more than
one pillion passenger who must sit astride the motorcycle, scooter or moped on
a proper seat.
Pillion passengers should face
forwards with both feet on the footrests.
You must NOT carry a pillion
passenger unless your motorcycle is designed to do do.
You can not carry a pillion
passenger if you are riding on L plates.
There is no law for the age of
children riding as a pillion passenger, but the highway code clearly states
that the pillion's feet must reach both footrests.
Daylight riding
Make yourself as visible as you
can from the side as well as the rear. For ecample; Bright clothing and crash
helmets with fluorescent strips.
Dipped headilghts, even in good
daytime visibility can help you to be seen.
Always be aware that other road
users may not see you, and may not judge your speed correctly.
Night riding
Make yourself as visible as you
can. Reflective clothing is advisable.
Manoeuring
Observation - Signal -
Manoeurve.
Look behind you before
manoeuvring, use mirrors if they are fitted.
Position yourself so that
drivers in front can see you in their mirrors.
When filtering in slow moving
traffic, take care and keep your speed slow.
